"There is more to Hadrian's Wall than a Wall.  Forts, milecastles, temples and turrets appear all along its line and museums, reconstructions and visitor centres bring the whole frontier to life. The ruins are sometimes stark and inspiring. Elsewhere they have mellowed into the landscape or are tucked into hidden corners of cities. Here are the most accessible and interesting sites to see today."

Caldbeck, Priest Mill, Caldbeck.    Backup

"Priest's Mill is an old watermill built by a Rector of Caldbeck on the riverbank just below the Church where John Peel and the Beauty of Buttermere lie buried. It is in a secluded position almost hidden from the road. From 1702 to 1933 it was used  as a stone-grinding corn mill. After that it was mainly used as a sawmill and joiner's workshop until 1965 when floods caused the mill dam to be destroyed. Most of the early 18th c. stone building is used to house an attractive restaurant overlooking the river, interesting shops including countryside gift and card shop, a goldsmith's workshop, a second hand bookshop, and a handmade pine furniture shop. It is well worth a visit to browse at leisure and perhaps buy unusual and beautiful gifts, to feel the history and atmosphere of the buildings, or simply to enjoy the quiet surroundings."

Carlisle, Lanercost Priory, Nr Carlisle.    Backup

"In 1166 when the foundations were laid for Lanercost Priory, situated in a beautiful valley between the river Irthing and Hadrian's Wall. Being close to the Scottish border though, meant that the peace was often shattered by marauding Scots raiding the affluent religious community. Today, the priory has a dual function. The red sandstone ruins give you a fascinating insight into religious life in the Middle Ages. But the nave of the priory church still survives intact and serves as a working parish church.
