ENVIRONMENT The Solway Coast Designated an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty (AONB) in 1964, the Solway Coast stretches from Rockcliffe Marsh, just west of Carlisle, to the sea brows North of Maryport, covering an area of about 115sq.km. This is an internationally important landscape, containing a variety of fragile habitats and many Sites of Special Scientific Interest. In archaeological terms it is a world leader, with Roman and Norse influences just waiting to be discovered. The Solway Coast has a unique character that is to be treasured by visitors and those who live and work here. Sustainable management is essential to ensure this character endures. The coastline is flat, sandy and very accessible, and you can walk for miles in either direction. It is a great place to visit for Birdwatching, a picnic or just to amble along and the children find it great for kites! This area is one of the great undiscovered joys of Cumbria and you will not find yourselves sharing it with very many people at all. More information about this area can be found at the Tullie House Museum in Carlisle.
There are four distinct features in the Solway Coast:
