BEVERLY HILLS, California — Backstreet Boys fans determined to find out details about the group's comeback might have "Incomplete" information.

Since some radio stations began playing a leaked song called "Incomplete" last month, many have assumed it's the first single from the group's as-yet-untitled new album, but that may not be the case.

While participating in various Grammy-related events recently, the Backstreet Boys revealed they are still deciding between "Incomplete," "I Still" and "Weird World," written by Five for Fighting's John Ondrasik.

Fans will find out March 18, when the single will be officially released to radio stations. "Whatever it is, it's going to shock you," Nick Carter promised.

The group finished recording last month and is now narrowing down a list of 43 completed tracks to the 15 or so that'll make the album (see "Backstreet Men? The Boys Grow Up On First Album In Five Years").

"It's going to be a hard process, but I think we have our favorites," Howie Dorough said.

"The [best songs] reveal themselves," Kevin Richardson said. "You just kind of keep cutting and the cream rises to the top. All we wanted to do on this record is explore — we recorded some heavy urban R&B tracks, we recorded some kinda heavy rock tracks, and we kind of found a place in the middle."

The Backstreet Boys worked with Boyz II Men, a cappella masters Take 6 and former Savage Garden singer Darren Hayes, as well as producers the Underdogs, John Shanks, Billy Mann and veteran teen-pop songsmith Max Martin.

"Max is actually the one that kind of made us shift and turn from going more urban and R&B more towards the [rock]," A.J. McLean said.

"Our whole album, we feel like this time, has a more organic sound," Richardson added. "We have more live instrumentation than in the past albums. We're using a lot of sequencers and synthesizers and stuff. I think it's safe to say it's on a kinda rock/pop/alternative vibe."

It took the group more than a year to make the album because "we were kind of lost for a little while," according to Richardson.

"Things were moving so fast," he said. "We have perspective now. We're all in a great place. A.J. is doing great, two and a half years sober now. Brian's got a baby boy. The batteries are recharged. We've had a chance to step back and soak it all in."

Being at the Grammy events, especially at the MusiCares tribute to Brian Wilson, where they sang "When I Grow Up (To Be a Man)" (see "Chili Peppers, Backstreet Salute Beach Boys' Brian Wilson"), got the guys extra stoked about returning to the spotlight.

"We're anxious to get back onstage," McLean said. "[MusiCares] was just a little taste, and now it's just like, 'God, I wanna get on the road again!' "

While their album is scheduled for a summer release, the Backstreet Boys are planning a warm-up club tour to kickoff next month. So far three dates have trickled out: March 24 at the Avalon in Boston, April 1 at the NorVa in Norfolk, Virginia, and April 2 at the House of Blues in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina.

  • Backstreet Fan Community Chooses a Name

We are happy to announce that the new name of the Backstreet Boys Fan Community is......(insert drum roll)...."Weird World"

We had loads and loads of entries in the Backstreet Boys "Name the Fan Community" Contest and we'd like to congratulate Peggy Lynn Burkett for her submission. We had several entries submitting "Weird World" or variations of it but Peggy was lucky enough to be the first submission. The guys really felt that this name encompassed what the fan community will be like once it is live. Once again congratulations Peggy and we look forward to launching Weird World this Spring.

  • Nick Carter Arrested For Allegedly Driving Under The Influence

Nick Carter was arrested in Southern California on Saturday for allegedly driving while under the influence.
The Backstreet Boys singer was stopped by police at about 7:30 p.m. in downtown Huntington Beach for violating a traffic law, Lieutenant Dave Bunetta said on Monday (March 7). The officers then conducted field sobriety tests and arrested the 25-year-old.
Carter was taken to the local police department, booked for investigation of DUI and had his vehicle impounded. He was released about four hours later with an agreement to appear in court within 45 days.
Because the investigation is still active, Bunetta could not release other details about the arrest or Carter's sobriety tests. "He was cooperative, and there was nothing unusual about his demeanor," Bunetta said.
A district attorney will determine within the next few weeks if there is enough evidence to file charges.
"Nick Carter deeply regrets the current situation," the singer's publicist said in a statement released Monday. "He is on doctor-prescribed medication and was unaware of its interaction possibilities."
The Backstreet Boys recently finished recording their first album in five years and will hit the road later this month to start promoting the music (see "Backstreet Boys Anxious To Tour, Kick Off Club Run In March").

  • Backstreet Boys Pick Power Ballad For Their Comeback Single
    Source: VH1.com

    By Jennifer Vineyard

    March 2005

The Backstreet Boys promised that the first single from their forthcoming new album would be a shocker — and for some, it will be. Though usually songs marking a return are fast-paced, this lead-off song is — brace yourself — a power ballad.
Called "Incomplete," the first Backstreet single will go to radio in two weeks, though some stations have already played leaked versions. The midtempo track begins with a haunting piano melody, and uses dark chords to underline a theme of regret and longing. One such verse goes: "I try to go on like I never knew you/ I'm awake but my world is half asleep/ I pray for this heart to be unbroken/ But without you all I'm going to be is incomplete."
While not a drastic change from their past material, the single does exhibit some changes vocally and musically, especially in the bridge, where Nick Carter's solo rock forays are most evident. Detractors might say the sound is a bit dated, but fans will likely applaud the more mature direction.
Fans will get to hear all of the Backstreet Boys' hits and more when they embark on their club tour, which kicks off Monday in New York (see "Backstreet Boys Anxious To Tour, Kick Off Club Run In March"). The club run is a warm-up for a larger arena tour this summer, to support the band's as-yet-untitled new album, which is due in early June. In the meantime, the Backstreet Boys play a tsunami-benefit concert in Malaysia on Friday (see "Black Eyed Peas, Backstreet Boys Head To Malaysia For Tsunami Relief").

'Incomplete' hits radio soon, but some are already playing it.
