Nick Carter says to hold off on comparisons to Justin Timberlake.

The celebrated boy bands of the Nineties are growing up. Nick Lachey of
98 Degrees got married. N' Sync's Lance Bass is a wannabe astronaut.
Backstreet Boys' Brian Littrell is a father.
And fellow Backstreeter Nick Carter is looking for artistic identity.
Carter, 22, released his solo debut, "Now or Never," in October to less
than enthusiastic reviews. The release is on the brink of going gold -
respectable, but hardly outstanding.
That pales to Justin Timberlake's solo debut, "Justified," which was
released within a week of Carter's effort and has gone double platinum
without the benefit of a tour.
"I'm not paying attention to what Justin has done," said Carter. "I wish
him well, but I'm doing my own thing. We made two different albums.
There's room for everybody. He's doing his thing. I'm doing mine."
"Justified" is much funkier than anything N' Sync has produced, and
Timberlake won acclaim for breaking ground. It's a different story for
Carter. "Now or Never" isn't a considerable departure from the
Backstreet sound. The rhythms are stronger; new beats punch up the mood
behind Carter's capable voice, and the lyrics are a bit steamier.
Still, Carter said, "My album definitely has a different feel to it. I
want to bring a new flavor. But I had to stay within perspective. You
can't just go from totally hot to totally cold. It's going to shock
people. I had to slowly build into it. I have to grow into what I'm
doing. It takes time."
Carter says he hasn't found his songwriting touch just yet.
"Writing wasn't something I did until recently. It came naturally, but
at the same time I worked real hard to find how I wanted to be perceived
as an artist."
Writer-producer Max Martin, who has penned many of the Backstreet hits,
held Carter's hand. Martin contributed "I Just Wanna Take You Home," by
far the catchiest track on "Now or Never."
"I'm sitting back and learning from him," Carter said. "He's like a
brother or a father. He's incredibly talented."
Carter is showcasing his solo material in venues such as the Hunka Bunka
Ballroom in Sayreville, where he will perform Thursday, and tellingly,
seats are still available.
"Most fans don't know that I've played in bar bands as a drummer during
Backstreet breaks," Carter said. "But this tour is obviously going to be
different from that. I'll be up front. It's been a while since we [the
Backstreet Boys] played in clubs. But I'm looking forward to it. It's
always good to see the faces in the crowd."
After Carter's tour ends in March, Backstreet will be back on track,
reconvening in the studio in April.
In the meantime, the credibility issue looms for Carter.
"That comes over time," Carter said. "I think some of the people who you
think aren't credible at the beginning of their career sometimes
surprise people. Take Madonna, for instance. I'm just trying to find
myself. I realize that in time I will gain credibility. Patience is a
virtue."

EOB: On the phone right now it is Nick Carter. Nick What up, What is
going on?
NICK: Just chillin man, Hanging out.
EOB: Very cool very cool. Hey congratulations on the tour, How's it
going so far?
NICK: Oh, It's going great, we just got back from Japan. Um sold out gig
and everything so It's really hot.
EOB: Wow, How much different is it traveling by yourself, is there
moments where you go "wow this is pretty good, I'm all by myself".
NICK: Well It's cool I do.. I definatly get alot of peace of mind, I get
to like, you know, just think about things, and really let everything
absorb, and you know, I'm learning new things being on my own. That
comes with everything from music to personal.
EOB: And the new single is going to be "I Got You" which we will be
hearing very shortly.\
NICK: That's like probably one of my favorite songs on the record.
EOB: The end of the month you'll be playing the probably one the coolest
venues in all of Michigan. Clutch Cargo's in Detroit, Have you been
there before?
NICK: I.. Don't believe I have , No.
EOB: It's very very cool you will..
NICK: I could be wrong! If I did it like along time ago, But I believe..
You know the cool thing about it you know, that I'm so happy That I can
do smaller places. We've been blessed to big places, But when you start
to doing them big venues and things like that people start to get
further and further back in the crowd and you know, you know it's like,
When we were doing it I was like "damn I wish we could do smaller
places" So now that I'm doing the solo thing.. I can do that.
EOB: Do you find that doing the smaller shows re-energizes you as a
musician cause you get to be so close to the crowd?
NICK: Oh yeah. it does everything, You, you get the energy from the
crowd it just like hypnotizing, It's incredible. You know, That's the
thing. we really, me and my band we we.. the kind of show we planned. Is
a show that we can play with the crowds emotions.You know, Jump em' up.
for you know. hold em' there you know. Then bring it back down. let em'
smooth sail for a little bit. Then come back up with some more songs..
It's really up and down. It's such a high energy show.
And It's different too, Don't go there expecting to see like you know,
dancing and typical Backstreet show, Because you know, what we
specialize in with Backstreet Boys were singers, Now really that's what
I'm doing the whole time is singing.
EOB: I called my cousin lastnight cause she is like the biggest Nick
carter fan ever and I wanted to let her know so she could listen on the
internet and she of course posted that on a message board that I was
going to be talking to you, and I had about 725,000 emails, about when
are you coming back to Europe.
NICK: Look, When I said we were coming back to Europe, and I'm coming
back to Europe, we still going to come back there, and you know, Those
fans over there, They mean just as much as the US and every place around
the world. Because they were there in the beginning.
EOB: And after you get all this touring wrapped up is that when you guys
are going to start to get back together, and maybe do another Backstreet
Boys album?
NICK: Well... You see the thing is, That is something we have to discuss
whether or not I either go back to Europe by myself or come back with
the boys. You know what I'm sayin'. Because, You know in probably late
March we are going to start recording a record possibly, you know and
them um.. we are going to have it done probably around May or June and
it might be a whole new ball game.
EOB: Nick, I know that you are super swamped so I'm going to let you go,
Have a great rest of the tour and we will talk to you when you come back
with the Backstreet Boys.
