Backstreet Boy's Offshore Powerboat Racing Team Set for Hometown Debut in the Florida Keys, May 17-19

MARATHON, Fla. -Nick Carter, one of the acclaimed Backstreet Boys' pop music group, loves offshore powerboat racing.
His father, Bob Carter, is even more enamored of the sport.
Between them, the two residents of Marathon, in the Florida Keys, have established the Nick Carter Racing Team and are scheduled to have their first hometown start Friday, May 17, through Sunday, May 19, at the APBA Marathon Offshore Grand Prix, the second race of the American Power Boat Association's 2002 offshore racing season.
The Carter team, won the Super Vee class at the circuit's first race, April 28 in Daytona Beach. The boat is driven by Steve Oropeza and throttled by Lee Murray, both of Key West, Fla. Bob Carter was scheduled to drive, but says a back injury is keeping him on shore.
Nick Carter is contemplating the purchase of a second, smaller boat to personally race in while he learns the intricacies of offshore competition before moving up to a larger boat. Meanwhile his team's focus is squarely aimed at the Marathon event.
"This race will be 100 percent visible from the old Seven-Mile Bridge where most of the spectators will be," race producer Lee Mills said.
Offshore racing is scheduled for Saturday and Sunday with races beginning at noon and 2 p.m. both days. Race headquarters is at Hawk's Cay Resort.
A one-day race viewing pass on the bridge costs $15; a two-day ticket is $25. A combination pass for bridge viewing and access to the race village costs $40 a person. A special VIP viewing area providing lunch buffet and race poster costs $100 for one day and $150 for both days. "Nick Carter and his brother Aaron are planning to spend both race days in the VIP area," Mills said.
APBA Offshore has teamed with Ticketmaster to provide convenient venues to purchase admissions to the Marathon event. Simply call Ticketmaster or go to www.ticketmaster.com and search for "Marathon OS Grand Prix." More information is also available on the APBA web site at www.apbaoffshore.com and for additional accommodations information, call Hawk's Cay at 1-888-814-9104 or go to www.hawkscay.com

  • Genesis Awards Celebrates Sweet Sixteen       back up
    Source: PR Newswire

ENCINO, Calif -- The Genesis Awards has a long-standing tradition of moving its audience, and this year proved no different. The only televised awards special that honors individuals in the major media for spotlighting animal issues with courage, creativity and integrity brought 900 people to their feet with the help of celebrities, two heroic Labrador retrievers and one rock star. Presented by The Ark Trust, Inc., a national nonprofit animal protection organization, the Sixteenth Annual Genesis Awards was taped on March 16 in Beverly Hills and will air as a two-hour Television Special on Animal Planet, May 19 and May 25.
Co-hosts Wendie Malick (Just Shoot Me) and James Cromwell (Babe), were on hand to honor winners including the film Dr. Dolittle 2, TV shows Dharma & Greg, Providence, and Law & Order, as well as hard-hitting news shows such as Primetime Thursday, ABC World News Tonight with Peter Jennings and MSNBC Investigates. "2001 was a vintage year for intelligent, ground-breaking material," Ark Trust President and Founder Gretchen Wyler said adding, "It runs the gamut from personal ethical questions about fishing for sport, to turkey at Thanksgiving, to the extreme cruelty of Japan's bear parks." Over twenty celebrity presenters turned out for the occasion, including Shannon Elizabeth (American Pie), Charlotte Ross (NYPD Blue), Doris Roberts (Everybody Loves Raymond), Jessalyn Gilsig (Boston Public) and Ken Howard (Crossing Jordan).
Academy Award-winning actress Ellen Burstyn accepted her Genesis Award as producer and star of the Lifetime made-for-TV movie Within These Walls, the true story of a prison dog-training program that exemplifies the human/canine relationship. Burstyn's award was presented by one-time onscreen "daughter" Linda Blair. Forever remembered for their roles in the film classic The Exorcist, the two happily shared the limelight without incident. For many, the show's most memorable segment was the "Tribute to the Animals Affected by September 11," honoring the animals impacted by unimaginable violence, including video footage from New York City, Afghanistan and Pakistan. The Tribute culminated with a heartfelt speech by singer AJ McLean of the Backstreet Boys, who introduced Abby and Duke, two of the brave California search and rescue dogs who had helped at Ground Zero. He was also accompanied to the Awards by his own dog Benji, pictured below right.

The evening also included an appearance by Special Honoree Jill Robinson, whose efforts to end the cruel practice of bear bile farming in China were highlighted in Asian Geographic's Genesis Award-winning article "Bear Witness," a videotaped speech from outspoken animal advocate Senator Robert Byrd and a performance of the Genesis Award-winning song "Bearly Hangin' On" by Claude Carmichael and Pete Wasner.
The Genesis Awards TV Special was produced by Paul Flattery, directed by Michael Dempsey and written by Mike Winikoff and Paul Flattery. Gretchen Wyler and Robert Halmi, Sr. are the executive producers. For a complete list of Genesis Awards winners please visit www.arktrust.org or call (818) 501-2275 ext. 14. • Backstreet Boy Kevin Richardson Helps Fight Kentucky River Pollution                   back up

    By: Jason Gelman, New York
Backstreet Boy Kevin Richardson, environmental attorney Robert F. Kennedy Jr., and Eastern Kentucky University President Joanne Glasser helped launch the new Kentucky Riverkeeper program at the state's Fort Boonesborough State Park on Monday (May 6). The trio, among others, christened a boat that will be used for citizen patrols aimed at fighting pollution on the 259-mile-long Kentucky River.
Illegal dumping of waste as well as runoff from coalmines, logging, and construction are among the many problems that plague the Kentucky River's water quality. "What I see makes me very sad," Richardson said at the ceremony. "We're going to make sure those responsible for polluting the water are going to pay, literally going to pay."
The Kentuckian Richardson is an Estill County native who formed his own environmental foundation called Just Within Reach last year. "The quality of that water out there is unacceptable and sad," Richardson told the local Kentucky Herald-Leader newspaper. "My mother told me she used to play hooky to go play in the Kentucky River. I want my children one day to be able to play there, too."
Kentucky Riverkeeper is a nonprofit organization established by the Center For Appalachian Studies at Eastern Kentucky University. It is part of Waterkeeper Alliance, an organization founded by Robert F. Kennedy Jr. whose mission is to protect and restore the quality of the world's waterways.
