Boy Nick Carter's boat racing team wins debut

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. - Backstreet Boys singer Nick Carter is once
again at the top of the charts - this time in high-speed powerboat
racing.
The 22-year-old pop star on Sunday watched his team, Nick Carter
Racing, win the first race of this year's American Power Boat
Association Offshore Tour.
The event marked the debut of Carter's 40-foot, 130-mph Super Vee-class
boat, which had never been tested in open-water competition.
"I didn't expect we would do so well," Carter said.
"I would have been happy just to place."
Carter started the team in February so his father, Bob, could pilot
the boat in races. Bob Carter let Key West chiropractor Steve
Oropeza take the helm Sunday while fellow Key West resident Lee
Murray handled the throttles.
Nick Carter also announced that he was "seriously
thinking" about buying another race boat and running it
himself.
"I've really gotten into the sport. I'll start off in one of
the smaller classes, learn all I can," Nick Carter said.
The Carter family lives in the Florida Keys. They were introduced to
high-speed offshore powerboat racing during last November's Offshore
World Championships in Key West.
The Offshore Tour makes its next stop in Carter's hometown of
Marathon on May 17-19.

Kentucky
trots out celebs for the Derby

LOUISVILLE -- The running of the 128th Kentucky Derby is Saturday,
and the jockeys may have to the share the spotlight with celebrities
ready to horse around.
The town is still buzzing from last year's pre-race festivities. Kid
Rock and Pamela Anderson made 2001 a year to remember with their
antics at the city's Derby Eve bash, the annual Barnstable-Brown
Party, thrown by twin sisters Priscilla Barnstable and Patricia
Barnstable-Brown.
The party host saw Kid Rock at his recent Louisville show, where he
told her he was going to fly his jet in and be there right after a
concert. She says he told her: ''It is the only fun I get to have
all year.''
But he's not confirmed.
Other guests across town in another party include Backstreet Boys
Kevin Richardson and Howie Dorough.

Man
awaiting sentencing in BSB fraud

For a time, Carl A. Glorioso appeared to be leading the heady life
of an A-list entertainment promoter. Investors gave him hundreds of
thousands of dollars to promote concerts for the likes of the
Backstreet Boys (news - web sites), Amy Grant and Jimmy Buffett. He
promised big profits and doled out perks like front-row
tickets.
But, as Glorioso later would admit, he had no ties to the superstar
performers and no role in their events. Rather than helping organize
major concerts in 2000, the Frederick County man was juggling a
precarious shell game, court records show, where he tried to avoid
detection by paying back his first unwitting investor, Baltimore
Magazine publisher Stephen A. Geppi, with money from
others.
When he pleaded guilty to federal fraud charges last spring,
Glorioso promised to make amends. Instead, federal authorities say
in court papers that he ran the same scheme again - collecting at
least $347,000 from individuals who believed they were investing in
music video productions, and then using that money to repay other
victims.
Glorioso has not answered the government's latest allegations.
Defense attorney Douglas K. Thornton of Frederick has said his
client would respond in court, where he is due this morning for
sentencing and where federal prosecutors are expected to argue that
Glorioso's track record calls for jail time.

He Loves Rock and Roll
'N Sync isn't the only boy band making solo strides. Nick Carter
is making a name for himself as well. Word on the street is that the
Backstreet Boy is putting the finishing touches on his album, slated
for release this August. "I'm psyched. I wanted to do something
by myself," Nick spills. "I've been in the studio
recording my own music. I think everybody kind of knows I've been
rock-influenced, and I think I might even do a little pop rock. The
fans are going to be really surprised because the songs are really
edgy and different."
Jealous of Aaron's Freedom
Being with Backstreet for seven years [they mean 9], Nick has always
aspired to do his own thing. He even reveals that at times, he's
envied his 15-year-old brother Aaron for having that freedom.
"He can do whatever he wants and he doesn't have to cooperate
with anyone," Nick explains.
The 22-year-old reportedly spent a week in Stockholm, Sweden to
record with producer Max Martin. And at press time, he had 20 songs
in the works --- 12 of which he plans on including on the album
tentatively titled The Life of Nick Carter. Aaron describes his big
bro's new sound as "more Bon Jovi than Backstreet."
The End of BSB?
With Nick going solo, could this mean the end of Backstreet?
Reportedly, the guys have had a hard time accepting Nick's decision
to hire BSB's former management company The Firm to handle his solo
career, while the rest of the group has severed all ties.
"We're going through a difficult time right now," Kevin
says. "There's a lot of things going on, and everybody wants to
have a say. Only fate can tell what's going to happen in the
future."
Meanwhile, the next Backstreet album is tentatively scheduled for
release right after Nick's solo CD. The guys are currently whipping
up a batch of new tunes and plan to be ever more hands-on than they
were on Black & Blue --- writing tracks individually as well as
together. They've recruited Jermaine Dupri, who has worked with
artists like Lil' Bow Wow and Jagged Edge, as well as Glen Ballard,
best known for his work with Dave Matthews Band and Alanis Morisette.
So, even if a breakup is imminent, it looks like we'll at least get
another album from the boys. "More than half of the songs have
been recorded," Kevin explains. "Why would we split
up?"
