Lawsuit: Pop star's ex-manager a racketeer
By: GRAHAM BRINK, Times Staff Writer
TAMPA -- Teenage pop star Aaron Carter filed a lawsuit Monday that
accuses his former manager and record label of cheating him out of
hundreds of thousands of dollars.
The suit, filed in state court in Hillsborough County, also accuses
manager Lou Pearlman and his company Trans Continental Records of
racketeering for a deliberate pattern of criminal activity in
dealing with clients like Carter.
"This isn't just an honest disagreement over the terms of a
contract," said Tampa lawyer William Yanger, who represents
Carter. "This is something that has happened time and time
again."
Scott Bennett, vice president of Trans Continental, said company
officials not only feel that they don't owe Carter any money but
that Carter might owe the company money. Bennett had not seen the
lawsuit and said he could not comment on the details.
According to the lawsuit, Carter signed with Trans Continental in
1997. Among other things, the contract called for regular
accountings of the revenue Carter generated and the payment of
royalties in the amount of two-thirds of all revenues received from
sales of the recordings.
Yanger was not sure exactly how much Carter is owed since the
regular accounting was not provided as the contract specified, he
said. The lawsuit states that the distributor of Carter's records
has paid Trans Continental at least $530,000 in royalties and more
in undisclosed compensation.
Trans Continental has paid Carter nothing, the suit states.
Carter, 14, was born in Tampa and rose to fame in the late 1990s
with hits like Crazy Little Party Girl, I'm Gonna Miss You Forever
and Shake It. He followed that up with the 2000 release of the album
Aaron's Party (Come Get It) and a single and video of the same name.
He has opened for Britney Spears and has sung with his brother Nick
Carter of the Backstreet Boys.
Pearlman and Trans Continental once represented the Backstreet Boys
and 'N Sync, both of which sued to be released from their deals,
accusing Pearlman of deception and cheating them out of royalties.
Those cases have been settled.
A history of deliberately deceiving clients, including Carter, the
Backstreet Boys, 'N Sync and Take 5, substantiates the racketeering
charge, the suit alleges. Plaintiffs who win civil racketeering
claims can be awarded up to triple the monetary damages, according
to Florida civil statutes.
"They find talented kids, sign them, watch them get successful,
don't pay them, wait for them to sue and then settle the
cases," Yanger said. "It is not an isolated
case."

Backstreet Boys World Summer Tour to Include Elwood City
ARTHUR It's Only Rock 'n' Roll - Sunday, August 25, 2002, 8:00
pm ET
As world-famous pop stars, the Backstreet Boys tour the globe,
entertaining their millions of fans in cities both big and small.
This summer, they will make a special appearance in Elwood City,
home of the world's most popular aardvark. The Backstreet Boys will
guest star in ARTHUR It's Only Rock 'n' Roll, premiering Sunday,
August 25, at 8:00 pm ET. Behind the Scenes
This hour-long special features an animated Brian, Kevin, Nick, AJ,
and Howie D. singing and dancing along with Francine and her own
band, U Stink, as well as behind-the-scenes footage of the
Backstreet Boys at work. Recording took place last month in Los
Angeles. And while the two original songs performed in the special
were written especially for ARTHUR by Sarah Durkee and Paul Jacobs,
the Backstreet Boys added their own unique style into the mix.
"We really enjoyed watching the Backstreet Boys' collaborative
process," says ARTHUR producer Pierre Valette. "The five
of them worked out their own harmonies and kept pushing themselves
to lay down the best possible tracks they could, having a great time
all along. We walked away with three songs that we are all thrilled
with." In addition to the two original songs, the Backstreet
Boys recorded their own version of the ARTHUR theme song, originally
recorded by Ziggy Marley.
And how did the Backstreet Boys feel about being transformed into
cartoon characters? "All of us used to watch cartoons when we
were younger. I don't know if anybody else dreamt of being a cartoon
character, but I did. And here we are doing it as a unit. And we're
singing too, which is cool," says group member AJ.
Marc Brown's inspiring car ride
ARTHUR creator Marc Brown developed It's Only Rock 'n' Roll
after spending time in the car with his daughter. "I first
heard the Backstreet Boys thanks to my teenage daughter who controls
the dial of our car radio," says Brown. "There's something
about their music that I've enjoyed from the very beginning. I
particularly like their a cappella harmonies. I was also struck by
how their music really resonates with kids of all ages."
Fans of PBS
After Brown approached the group, the Backstreet Boys were eager
to fit ARTHUR into their busy schedules. It turns out that they are
big fans of PBS.
"I've gone through about three decades of PBS," says Howie
D. "Growing up as a little kid, I started off watching Sesame
Street, The Electric Company, and Mister Rogers. I used to always
stay up with my dad watching PBS. And now, as an uncle, my little
nieces are introducing me to ARTHUR."
Brian adds, "I think PBS is great. It's something parents,
whether they're at work or if they're cooking dinner, can put the
kids in front of, and they don't have to worry about what their kids
are watching on TV. I think it's good for kids, and it's good for
parents."
More information
Looking for more information about ARTHUR It's Only Rock 'n'
Roll? Keep an eye out on PBS Express for updates. Also, in June,
WGBH Station Relations will be offering a special poster featuring
the animated Backstreet Boys. In addition, a pledge toolkit is being
designed to help your station make the most of the Backstreet Boys'
arrival.

LOS ANGELES, Jun 27, 2002 (ENTERTAINMENT WIRE) -- As America
prepares to proudly display her colors this July 4th, Mervyn's, a
family favorite shopping destination, has partnered with the Los
Angeles Dodgers for a new cause-related initiative called
"Bases to Benefit RBI," a special program benefiting
Reviving Baseball in Inner Cities (RBI).
The program has enlisted the aid of celebrities such as John
Travolta, Kelly Preston, Billy Bob Thornton, Angelina Jolie, Whoopi
Goldberg, Joey Fatone ('NSync), Brian Littrell (Backstreet Boys),
MTV's Daisy Fuentes, "Spy TV's" Ali Landry, "The
Other Half's" Mario Lopez, Latin singing sensation Jon Secada,
"Entertainment Tonight" host Bob Goen and "The Today

Tracy, who have each agreed to decorate an actual baseball base in
different Americana themes, which will be auctioned off on Yahoo!(R)
Auctions (http://auctions.yahoo.com)
beginning July 11, 2002.
All proceeds from the Yahoo! auction will be donated to RBI, a
grassroots outreach program designed to promote youth interest in
baseball, increase the self-esteem of disadvantaged children and
encourage kids to stay in school. The program, which began in 1989,
is supported league-wide and has helped more than 100,000 boys and
girls each year in 137 cities across America.
"Mervyn's has a long-standing tradition of giving back to the
communities in which we do business," said Frank Castiglione,
Senior Vice President Marketing for Mervyn's. "By partnering
with the Dodgers and some of Hollywood's biggest stars, we can raise
both awareness of this outstanding program as well as financial
resources to help give disadvantaged youth in America the
opportunity to play ball and be a part of the Great American
Pastime."
"It is a great pleasure to team up with Mervyn's and RBI for
this terrific cause," said Kris Rone, Los Angeles Dodgers
Executive Vice President and Chief Marketing Officer. "The
Dodgers have actively been involved with RBI, and the 'Bases to
Benefit RBI' program is just another way of reaching out and helping
RBI and kids in our local community."
Mervyn's and the Dodgers' "Bases to Benefit RBI" program
kicks off July 11 with the unveiling of a display of all the bases
at Dodger Stadium during the pre-game show and the simultaneous
launch of the items on Yahoo! Auctions. The celebrity-decorated
bases will be listed for a 10-day time period, with the auction
officially closing on Saturday, July 20. Additionally, on July 20
the Dodgers will hold a special silent auction at Dodger Stadium
during the game where attendees may bid on the bases decorated by
Green and Tracy. A check presentation will take place Sunday, July
21, during the Dodgers home game vs. the San Francisco Giants, with
all proceeds from the Yahoo! auction donated to the RBI
Program.
The Mervyn's/Dodgers "Bases to Benefit RBI" program is
just one part of Mervyn's exclusive sponsorship of the Dodgers
"Think Red, White & Blue Week" campaign taking place
June 24-27 during the Dodgers home game series vs. the Colorado
Rockies.

please call the Mervyn's/Dodgers "Bases to Benefit RBI"
program hotline at 1-800-730-9252.
About RBI
Reviving Baseball in Inner Cities (RBI) was created in 1989, as
Los Angeles-arena Major League scouts, led by John Young, sought to
increase the number of young players, give more local athletes an
opportunity to play baseball and establish a program that would
develop talent. The Dodgers joined scouts, representatives from
junior high schools, high schools and colleges along with the
Amateur Athletic Foundation and the City of Los Angeles Recreation
and Parks Department in developing a program that has grown from a
local project into a 140-city national entity. In fact, in 1993, RBI
was adopted and funded by Major League Baseball and currently
attracts over 400,000 children across America.
About the Los Angeles Dodgers
The Dodgers' community commitment is comprehensive and
far-reaching, promoting education, sports and recreation. The club
has forged partnerships in the public and private sectors, bringing
a wealth of positive activities to a wide-ranging and diverse
citizenry. That commitment has touched the lives of millions with
the help of Dodger players who are active participants in these
programs. In addition, the Dodgers Dream Foundation, founded in
1998, was created to provide educational, athletic and recreational
opportunities for the youth of Greater Los Angeles community.

Girls
Out To Get Carter
back up
Source: BSB
Worldpop Message Board
Nick Carter lives in Beaconsfield and is in the middle of his A
Levels so why are lust-filled teenage girls from across the world
sending him gushing emails begging for his autograph?
The reason lies in his name - the punk rock fan shares the same name
as blonde-haired Nick Carter of boy-band The Backstreet Boys. The 17
year old has been sent fawning emails from girls as far away as
Australia since the band launched in 1996 - some have become so
fanatical that Nick (the one from Beaconsfield) has been forced to
block their advances.
The George's Road resident said "My most loyal fan is from
Sweden. Most of the time it's 'I'm a big fan. Could you send me an
autograph and a picture?'. But over the past three years i have been
getting birthday emails from the Swede, so i have had to block her
sending me emails.
A closer inspection of the two Nicks reveals some spooky
similarities, both play the guitar, both own dogs as pets, both have
blue eyes and blonde hair. They share the same favourite actor -
Bruce Willis and both are six footers. They also have similar
sounding middle names, John, in Beaconsfield, and Gene in
Florida.
Despite the connections Nick has little time for the squeaky clean
namesake famed for singing 'I Want it That Way'. He said: "I
think their music is pretty pathetic. I like bands like Finch and
Midtown so i don't have much respect for the art he
creates."
Nick first realized the connection when female school friends at
Seer Green Primary School pointed it out. He said: "It was a
source of amusement for about two weeks and then i got bored with
it. But it still carries on now. There are no new jokes i can
possibly think of, I think I've heard them all."
The Backstreet Boys were unavailable for comment.
